This bill funds a bone marrow donor recruitment program through the California DMV. If this bill is passed, newly registered drivers will have the opportunity to opt-in to the bone marrow registry list, similar to the current organ donor opt-in option when registering for a license. If one chooses to opt-in to be a bone marrow donor, Be the Match will send an easy-to-use swab kit to the individual’s address.
Countless pediatric cancer patients, like Bryson, need bone marrow transplants as part of their treatment plan, so it is important that registering to be a bone marrow donor is as easy and accessible as possible. This bill will help enable that. Especially since it is much more difficult for minorities (African Americans, Asians, etc) to find a match on the donor list, it is increasingly important for people to register, especially since California is such a diverse state.
